Re: Time to give up on Fargesia?
You could grow your own next generation from the seeds. But not predicting exactly what it will look like.

Re: Need Help Identifying Clumping Bamboo
He is right near me, it is zone 6a.
I guess anything is possible.
This is the first time I have heard of a bamboo thriving 2 zones below its hardiness rating.

Re: Need Help Identifying Clumping Bamboo
Michael,
On second look.
This is in Bergen county NJ?
Would not expect aurea to survive outside there, I think it's 6a or 6b.
Maybe someone more knowledgeable about aurea hardiness can comment?

Re: Need Help Identifying Clumping Bamboo
Michael, Very beautiful plant. I live close to your area. Like most Ph. aurea can get out of control very quickly. If you are new to running bamboo, you may want to do a little research on this to know what you are getting into. Goto Busches Nursery 55 New Jersey 10, Whippany, NJ 07981 Ask them how ...

Re: Brown tips on leaves....
Is your water chlorinated? or softened? any purification chemicals from the utility? I have often heard the recommendation to let water stand for 24 hours (basically distilling) before watering some plants. Pain in the A$$, but it works for many potted plants. It has worked for my potted bamboos as ...

Re: Wanted: Most Cold Hardy Bamboo Zone 3/4
Can't think of anything that will survive -30F. Do you have a place to keep potted bamboo indoors in the winter, like a garage or something? Mine lived for months with almost no light. They came out healthier than the plants in the ground and I'm in zone 6a. Not sure if that appeals to you but that ...

Re: Scabrida in the heat
I think we might be looking at the ultimate test, my scrabida from BG, suspected TC looks a lot like his.

Irss, Thanks for that beatiful photo, really nice nuda grove. I think I have a similar climate as you, zone 6a, maybe hotter in the summer. Are you in southern coastal CT? Do you know what zone you are in? I have good size shoots from a potted(insulated pot outdoors) nigra but the larger existing cu...

Re: when to cull?
Snowbird, Not sure how cold you climate is but one thing you may want to consider. If you bamboo is marginal for your zone, the older smaller culms maybe a little more cold hardy. Partly because they can be burined under the snow, maybe because they are more established. Last winter my newest, talle...

Re: Scabrida in the heat
Watchnerd, I mean the culms die and throw up only tin survival shoots the next year. The TCs are said not to have the same cold hardiness as the field divisions. There is a gentlemen on this forum who has both and compares pictures in his post. The difference is pretty dramatic. Not sure how to find...

Re: P.Nigra Leaf Scorch
That looks like it is caused by chlorinated water. I do not live in LA so I'm not 100%. You can try to distill your water. Let it stand for 24 hours before watering your plants. This reduces chlorine content. It has worked for me here with potted plants. May not be very convenient depending on how m...

Re: most and least rewarding boos of 2011
Scabrida has been the most dissapointing, just doesn't do well in my climate despite hardiness claims of the supplier. "Dr. Don" has been no bluer, for me, than any other green phylo. Most rewarding. 1 gallon 20" high hale spent the winter in a 10 gallon pot in a windowless garage and...

Mine was from Bamboo Garden and I'm pretty sure it is a TC. Certainly acts like one in the winter.

Re: New nigra hootss drooping
Thanks for the replies. To me it remains a mystery. I have a 10 gallon Hale which was in a windowless garage for 3 months this winter, had 10' shoots which were not floppy, even though it got just as much rain as Mr. Floppy Culms. So, I'm thinking cold damage, but, floppy culms in SC? If not, I'm th...

Re: Scabrida in the heat
Do you know if your scabrida is a TC? Mine is and was destroyed by brief -5F, with a wind block on 3 sides and some heating from nearby houses. It did not do well last summer during a week of mid and high 90's either. It is now just small survival shoots. Someone has posted a comparison of his TC an...
