I have been growing Oldhamii hirose, Chungii and the smaller variety, Bambusa emeiensis (flava and viri) and Bambusa eutuldoides 'Viridivittata Inversa' all in the ground for about 4 years. Bambusa eutuldoides 'Viridivittata' and Bambusa textilis 'Kanapaha' i...

Re: Anybody growing Hirose?

This is the wammins second summer shooting.

The only real protection I did last year was throw a sheet over it. This year I am going to try to do something better for more protection.

Re: Anybody growing Hirose?

I am up in Fairhope, north of you a few miles. I too have purchased some Hirose from the place in Pensacola(as well as many others). My Hirose has top killed every year  . I am now going into my third winter with it, I think. It has put up two new culms this year as well as a bunch of leaf out....

Re: Do Shoots Carry Over Seasons?

I had my B. Lako shoot last summer before I brought it inside for the winter. While it did not grow any significant amount indoors, it is now outside and growing again.

Re: Rhizomes

I planted a 3 gallon pot of Vivax 'Huangwenzhu' in the middle of last summer. Early this January I pulled it out to plant something different there instead and managed to pull out a 5-6ft rhizome with it. I was suprised that is ran that much in only a short period.

Just a little update.

Well the shoot has grown an incredible 2 inches :lol. It still looks very healthy so we will see what happens. I just moved the Lako back outdoors and should be happier soon.

Re: Tis the season to notice bamboo groves you never saw bef

There is a grove that I have spotted going to my sisters house. It is in the middle of some woods so I can only see the tops poking out above the trees, it must be ateast 50'. I spoke with a guy that was on the road and asked him about it and he said that there are some 4-5" culms in there (wet...

Re: Japanese Weeping Cherry Trees.

Thanks for the info. Another question, can you get a non-grafted Yoshino or Kwanzan or are they all grafts now? I don't know why but I have never really like the idea of grafted trees. We had a satsuma that was grafted and it did good for awhile and then quickly went down hill like it had been taken...

Re: Japanese Weeping Cherry Trees.

Well I talked to a trusted nursery and they said they only carry the Taiwan Cherry Tree (Prunus campanulata) which is a bit more heat tolarant and does fairly well he said. He went on to say it just doesn't get cold enough here for the japanese cherry blossom trees, and they will start to die off af...

Re: Japanese Weeping Cherry Trees.

Thanks. Thinking about it I haven't seen any around, but haven't really been looking either.

Looks like I need to take a ride and do some researching.
