Dendrocalamus elegans – Elegant Bamboo
This is Dieter Ohrnberger’s baby. He collected seeds in northern Thailand and was container-growing the seedlings when I visited in 2012. I imported a couple of them and we’ve been test growing since 2014. It’s a feathery, delicate bamboo with silver/gray culms. The overall height shouldn’t exceed 15-18’. Works well in decorative containers or planters. We don’t yet know the cold hardiness.

Bambusa tuldoides cv. ‘Swolleninternode’ – Cool Buddha Bamboo
We’re excited about this one simply because it solves a problem. B.vulgaris Wamin produces reliably bellies culms but can’t handle temperatures near or below freezing. B.ventricosa is somewhat cold hardy but doesn’t belly reliably. B.tuldoides cv. ‘Swolleninternode’ is as cold hardy as the standard B.tuldoides and bellies as reliably as B.vulgaris Wamin.
We collected it in Hu’an, China and it spent two years in USDA quarantine. We’ve been test growing for three years.

Bambusa multiplex ‘Rosa’
This bamboo was field-collected in Yunnan, China by Cliff Sussman with Professor Tan. It is a Bambusa multiplex variety that is similar to B.multiplex stripestem fernleaf, except the tiny culms are solid pink rather than striated.
This is a very small bamboo, reaching 4’ tall so far. It is as cold hardy as an in the B.multiplex group (high teens-low 20s F).
