Survivor Bamboo - identification, please

Post by Canadrew »

Hi all,

The better half and I were out walking the neighbourhood and we found a small trail leading to a park next to a house. There was evidence of some very tall bamboo (1-1.5" cane) that were long since dead, but there are a few small shoots/canes growing up around it. I don't know what it is, but it's a Phyllostachys with the grooved culm.
The culms are a solid green, with no compression - 4ft tall at the max - but the dead cane (background) is large, so shows that this was big in its heyday.

Zone 8A, Pacific Northwest. A quick googling - maybe a heteroclada (water?)

Thanks,

I can't tell if it is a shadow or culm detail on the larger dead culm - under the node, but if it is a section of node that shows detail under the node, combined with the shoots might suggest Phy aurea. By detail I mean...some Phy aurea nodes appear to have a 'band' of culm that is slightly wider than the rest of the culm below it, down to the next node. Not sure that makes sense, but look at photos of it and you'll see it at times, especially on smaller diameter culms.

To my eye the dead culm appears to have a 'line' about 3/4" below two nodes, that line would be the end of the wider band - or a shadow.

Thanks for that! If the weather cooperates, I'll wander down there again this weekend and take a closer look - at first glance they looked like evenly spaced nodes as cylindrical as they come... but I see what you're getting at.

Those don't look like juvenile Ph. heteroclada shoots to me.
