I love seeing these types of posts, but get envious too.

Everybody measuring, but not one person climbing. ;)

Out of curiosity -- when the culms get that big, are the rhizomes any bigger than when the culms were smaller?

The rhizomes do get bigger as the grove gets older. We've only taken divisions from the edge, so I wouldn't know how big they are right underneath the largest culms. The biggest rhizome I've seen was about 1" in diameter, but again, that was at the edge.

There is some breakage, although we don't get as much snow as some places. We do get some ice every once in a while. I know vivax has a reputation for breaking more than other varieties, but I don't think its that bad. I might have a different opinion of it if I lived in an area that had more snow though.

That is very cool to see. Biggest mine ever got was 3 inches diameter, 50 ft tall, then they froze.

From what I have seen, vivax culms are brittle and prone to breakage after first season, but toughen up considerably after a couple of years.
