Henon colour change?

Post by thebambooguy »

While inspecting all my bamboo today I discovered that some canes of my Henon had turned black just like my black bamboo. Is this Typical for Henon or could this just be winter damage?

Nigra henonis should not be turning black.
I think your suspicion with with cold damage is likely.

What is the black pattern like?
Maybe you have a mix-up and it is boryana, which can turn quite black.

I'll see if I can post a picture tomorrow. It's definitely Nigra Henon unless the nursery I bought it from was wrong but I find that unlikely.

I'm starting to think that it's just damage from the winter but I'll post a picture regardless.

new here but my culms turned purple/black after freeze and winds (Fraser outflow lol) . they are apparently P Aurea. Yours have more of a spotty color. You did have a hard winter in the Okanogan?

Whoa that's pretty interesting looking. I wonder if it will affect the health of the canes

Not actually Okanagan, but close. I'm in the Kootenays. We were having a wonderfully mild winter up until a really nasty winter vortex came through, burned my boo's pretty badly, the worst of which being Dulcis which basically got killed to the ground

I'm a bit sceptical that you indeed have henon.
Frost damage can look really similar to the pattern nigra has but the black coloration on your bamboo seems a bit too consistent to me.

Your plant is still relatively small - how long have you had it for? New growth on Nigra punctata takes a few years to turn black.
By the way if it is nigra punctata rhizomes will also turn black over time, so it may be a way for you to identify it sooner as I really doubt that black spotting from frost damage would occur on rhizomes covered with soil.

All the best,

Nicholas

I hope it's just frost damage, I'd be pretty disappointed if it wasn't Henon as I already have two other nigra.

I've had this plant for probably 3-4 years? But this is the first time I haven't had to dig up and relocate all my bamboo because I found a permanent home for them. Those canes are from last year. I've also noticed they are a lot more straight than my other nigra which is a hall mark of Henon no?

Is it possible to identify from the new shoots that come up?

Oh right, Creston. You have a lot of hard freezes up that way for sure, guessing below zero F. I was reading about a fungus that looked similar to your spotting and colors. It said the fungus was not harmful. Good luck, my P Aurea are struggling, just had a huge wind event that stripped a ton of leaves. I hope new shoots continue, I have 3.

Photo of my Nigra Bory. Are you sure your Nigra Henon isn't really Bory?

My P.g.y. flowered 9 years ago (see photo). It still shoots new culms and flowers every year but never develops seeds.
