I haven't researched this species, but I would mulch heavily, preferably with manure, to give it a boost and a chance against competing weeds.

I've had some success growing a few genus of bamboo and I seem to have a knack for killing montane species, I'm certain my failures have been uppotting too soon/over watering/waterlogging. Not sure what your cause is but consider over watering perhaps?

That’s interesting brad,I have a irrigation System set up so I don’t water the bamboos separate, all the other bamboos around the Damarapa look great, maybe because the Damarapa didn’t fair well from winter it didn’t need as much water as the rest of the bamboos around it, I will water separately on that section from now on

Could be survival of fittest at work. Lots of plants in the same area sucking up the same nutrients. Based upon bamboo size, I'd give it a area with more standalone space so it can develop. This species is like the 3 bears - not too much sun and not too much shade. My experience says these guys like a sun/shade zone of 3 to develop properly. Rgds

Judging by the experiences expressed here (https://www.hardytropicals.co.uk/forum/ ... f=1&t=1816) it shoots early and late in the year. I'm assuming the bindweed in the photo is only on the surface and its rhizomes aren't entwining with the plant underground. From the descriptions, this is a lovely plant. I hope it recovers with some TLC. I want one now.

Thanks iain, the bindweed comes across from a different area and I have cleared it now, it’s a fantastic bamboo but only hardy to -8c so maybe it might not do well in Scotland, mind you it’s not done well here in south uk

On the bright side, it is a young planting. It will undoubtedly harden as it matures. At least it didn't suffer total top kill, meaning there is life in the rhizome, unlike one of my shiroshima plants. Our winter lows are fairly comparable. It's our summers where we diverge, given an average season. Put it this way, I hardly ever have to water.
