What to do with fully flowering bamboo

Post by Deane »

As some will know I have a Iridescens in full flower and it looks horrible and to be fair I need the space, there is no viable seeds, I can’t decide whether to leave it in ground, pot it up or compost it. I would like some opinions please

If you can stand looking in it, I'd say leave it be. Perhaps is will make a viable seed at some point. Also, there may be a few whip shoots that will come up not flowering and survive to grow past flowering. Both of those less likely if you cut it back, and won't happen if you pull it.

When P flexiosa flowered around here, new whip shoots came up at edges of groves and went on to rebuild the groves that weren't dug up. Not sure if that happens with every phyllo, and not sure your stand has enough energy to put up whip shoots when it is done flowering, but might be worth trying. If it lives, you'll probably have a bamboo that will not flower again for a long, long time.

I'd vote for dig it out, pot it up and use the space, if it comes back up then you can replant it.

I say dig it up.

You’ve got a wack of beautiful bamboos that would be terrific in that spot.

I purchased P. iridescens last year from The Rodings plantery. It isn't flowering. Maybe there are different clones. Or this is another case of mistaken identity.
