P.Shanghai 3

Re: P.Shanghai 3
Dragging up an old post here.
I planted a Shanghai 3 in the end. A small 5l division consitsing of a 15mm main culm that had been clipped at 18", and a very bendy baby culm approx 3ft long that completely bent over under the weight of its own leaves.
One shooting season on, and its thrown up three Culms 20mm wide and 8ft high)
Anyone got any reports on how theirs is doing in the UK, and whether it is Dulcis in disguise?? The only clips of info I have come accross is on forums where poeple are generally saying its a dissapointment.
So...... how are your's doing, one year on ??
****Edited to add link of my previously posted pic of Shanghai 3 a few weeks back.***

Joe Shanghai 3 in France is sizing up as faster than some of my vivax and slower than other vivax , also slower than parvifolia. Still it's at about two inches.

Re: P.Shanghai 3
At what temps did S3 top-kill? I may have to send it west if it's tender.

Re: P.Shanghai 3
I was surprised to read about S3, and its lack of hardiness. I had placed it at about the same hardiness as Vivax. During the winter of 2013-2014 we got below 0° F on a few occasions, and it had similar top burn as vivax. Is it possible that there is more than one plant we are calling S3?

Re: P.Shanghai 3
David, mine seemed a tad hardier than Vivax which has never wintered over in Indiana. Again, I think that my Indiana prolonged cold spells of 7-10 days below freezing makes the bamboo dieback easier at temps yours may hang on.David wrote:I was surprised to read about S3, and its lack of hardiness. Re: P.Shanghai 3
It would definitely be out of the question for here if 7-10 days below freezing is considered to be a long cold snap!
