Can't say I've noticed guttation at the level of sheath hairs before but the soil has been saturated for months now, just passed 7' mark of rain for season :happy4:

I love those gigantic Moso culms!
I don't know, but I have a feeling that around my moso, the soil level is like 10 cm higher than it was last year. The whole thing just elevated, soil and everything. There are many exposed rhizomes on top but I have yet to see what will come out of the soil when it starts shooting. Last year, we've had warmer spring and much warmer winter and it started shooting on April 1st. I guess this year, the first shoots will poke out a week or two after that.

We are experiencing unusually warm weather at the moment, but it will get cold again with below freezing mornings. Shooting postponed. :)

Cool, hopefully they keep their heads down until the cold weather is over. Yea I can't wait to see if they've sized up this year. Last year the biggest was 3.45". But, I had to cut out a bunch of rhizomes that had crossed in the the neighbor's property. So I'm not sure how big they will be.

Interestingly, last year the one shoot that I didn't cover turned out to be the tallest. It's not bigger diameter than the others, I guess the nodes are just longer. So I guess covering them might actually stunt their height somewhat. I didn't want to risk losing them to frost though.

Well, the same day I tried to be smartass and predict the shooting date, I got surprised when I saw the first shoots myself!

They will upsize. How much - I don't know. Yet :)

The Atrovaginata took a pretty good hit its first winter but appears to be shaking it off quite well. The main plant has only about 10-15 green leaves left but its shooting 4 shoots(3 shown here as one is just barely through the mulch) that are about the same size as last years 2 so if they all succeed it will be an improvement. Not to mention I am hoping there are more shoots that havent made it through the mulch yet. Time will tell.

Do you have a solid ID on this one?

Phyllostachys arcana 'Luteosulcata' seedlings (none of them is variegated)

Small hardly alive (one tiny culm) seedling survived the winter OK. If that's not an upsize, nothing is!

The vigorous seedling from last season started shooting, but there's no upsize. Perhaps later, these are just the first couple of shoots.
