Hi again.

I bought some 5-gallon bisetti. They are nicely rooted plants that have grown up in zone 6. They are kept in an unheated green house during the winter to keep the wind off of them. I'm going to pick them up around March 8.

I live in central PA in zone 6b/7a. Should I plant them when I get them, or should I wait until later?

Thanks,

jp

Since it hasn't been exposed to cold winds for a while, I'd probably leave it in the pot until all threat of cold is gone. There's not much advantage to getting it in the ground a month or two early in this case I'd say.

I think if you wait and keep it in the pot for a week or two it won't do it any harm. I would plant it when soil temperature gets at least to 8-10C, most likely in the beginning of April. I planted Fargesia murielae last April (around April 10th) and it grew a lot. Bisetii will love warm soil even more and will most likely start growing as soon as you plant it.

Just planted #5 Bisetti and six others in the ground that were in a greenhouse a week ago. So far they look great especially after this rain/snow storm.

Hello JP. I did a site search on ( spacing ) a little while ago and your post on shade tolerant bamboo came up. I found the Q's and A's awesome; Pretty much the questions I would ask because last year I started planting bamboo. I don't count the yellow groove the year before because I didn't know anything, though it looks great. That post might have changed my mind; I was going to buy a lot more red margin soon, but I will have to get more Bisetti . BTW., My first Bisetti and the other 6 that I put in the ground Feb. 2 are looking great. :drunken:

Hey Sully.

Yeah, these guys are awesome. My wife is a gardening guru, so I knew the basics about general growing, but I had no idea about the wide variety of bamboo and its particular habits. It's wonderful to have a resource like this.

Sully,

How are the bisetti you recently planted doing? I should be getting mine within a week.

Hello JP. I just went outside to have a look with a flashlight so I could answer your question. It looks fine; It does have a little leaf burn now which I would expect. If you are worried about the freeze I think your good. The main thing is to protect the rhizomes; Put a good layer of mulch. I really can't see anything going under 15F; and that's being conservative. Of course next winter will never be like this, so take advantage. Getting 1-2 inches of snow then rain tomorrow and I would hope just like last similar storm it made everything look upright and lively.
