Previously we got a cold burst which dropped the temperature down to 5.8F, by this time around after getting 3 inches of snow, the temperature went even lower to 2.7F. There are no freezes in the 15 day forecast so there are only around 4 more weeks in February to see it get even colder since it starts warming up by March.

It warmed up pretty quickly after it got down this low, and the humidity is pretty high like usual with no wind so I doubt this temperature caused any damage on anything that's still exposed.

Under tarps it's still staying relatively warm, well above freezing. 6.8C is equivalent to 44.2F, subtract 2.7F from that and there's a 41.5F temperature differential from under the tarps and outside during this deep freeze.

Has anyone else experienced extreme cold, so far this winter?

I havnt experienced ANY cold temps (relative of course, not cold for me is freezing for most :D ). The lowest so far as been -20C (not counting windchill, which can vary a lot). This so far effectively puts me in zone 6 ! (not bad for a zone 3 or 4 place!!!!).

The only extreme ive seen, is warm temps, and a lack of snow. On average we get about 3 or 4 feet of snow in the city (usually 5 feet a few km away from the lake). So far we have barley gotten a foot. IT did rain a bit when we would usually get snow (november and december), so I cannot say if it equates to "normal".

If it's not even that bad above lake Ontario, then I'm not expecting it to get below 0F this winter at all so it will likely be a zone 7 winter this year. I'm surprised that you even got a foot of snow because the most we ever got this year is around 3 inches and with the heavy rain we are getting with the latest storm, that will be gone in no time. I hope this becomes the new normal which is possible as the northern hemisphere is warming up gradually over the years.

One article explains this lack of extreme temperatures and overall warmth this winter to be the lack of a Blocking high over Greenland which often forces arctic air into the U.S.

Wrong lake, Im on lake Superior :D Down in southern ontario they have no snow as far as I know. IIR, the majority of the precipitation here is snow melt (which is getting less and less).

A heads up: Keep your eye on the etended forecast (abotu sunday - tuesday), there is a massive arctic outflow comming down here right now (lloydminster alberta is -33C today for the high, compared with 7C last week!). Its in NW ontario right now. It might come your way..

Still, the temps in my yard have not gone below -20C!!

It has not gone below 0 F so far for me, although it did reach that mark briefly.
It reaches 7 degrees celcius (42 F) today, so I decided to bring out my Rubro (that have been keep indoor) to get rid of the spider mites.

One night of 14º F or -10º C otherwise lows are in the 20º F to 25º F range for night time lows. This is zone 8 winter weather a full 1 to 2 zones warmer then usual.

So far it has been and the extended outlook has it continuing through this month. However, I am not going to let myself think that until the middle of February.

Then again, if this is a sample of what the future weather holds it probably isn't a good thing. :?

May I suggest Block Island, Rhode Island: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Block_Island#Climate economic conditions aside they have z8 winters and z5 summers.

Low here this past winter -12c (10.4F.)

Mildest I can ever recall was -10c (+14c) in the last 20 years.

Let's not talk about the horrors of the 1970's or the worst Feb- March 1994. That last one froze the English hollies and Jasminum nudiflorums to the ground.

My lowest temp was 22f this past winter, 18f the winter before that, and those lows were of no more than a few hours' duration. In our area we are facing unprecedented weed issues this year due to annual weeds that never died and perennial weeds that never topkilled and therefore had an early advantage this Spring. I don't think anyone here remembers two such mild winters in sequence. Hopefully it gets a little colder here next winter!
