Hi there,

This site was recommended to me by bamboogarden dot com because they couldn't answer my question.

I would like to know which species of bamboo is being used to get sap or juice out of to be used for drinking and infusing rice with.

I would also like to know at what age the bamboo would need to be harvested for juice, which part of the bamboo to use, at what part of the year and maybe even the hour of the day when it's best to do this. Also, if someone could give me the name of the manufacturer of the machine that extracts the juice that would be great.

Truth be told I'm going out of my mind trying to find info on this. There is nothing online about it, whatsoever. I can't find anything, so I would really appreciate you guys' help.

Best,

Darian

Oh, I forgot to add.

The little info I found referred to bamboo juice for drinking and infusing rice but then other info refers to bamboo sap that is apparently tapped like maple syrup and collected for several hours. So, it seems that there are two methods, one to extract juice and one to collect sap.

Hopefully someone can explain both processes in detail.

Thank you.

A number of different species can be used, one is Phyllostachys nigra. Bamboo juice is known as Zhu Li, Zhou You, Succus bambusae, etc.

There should be enough key words here to get you started.

Thanks foxd.

I checked it out but this is not it. This is a medicinal use and a different species.

The little I know is that it's a green bamboo, common to Asian countries and they either use short sections of stalk and run them through a machine that crushes them and extracts the juice for people to drink, like a green juice or the stalks are "tapped" by cutting above the notches to collect sap for several hours. (I actually added that info to my initial post but it never showed up.)

So what I'm looking for is for someone to tell me what species of bamboo is used for extracting juice, how old the stalk has to be, when to harvest, how to process it and what's the name of the company that manufactures the machine that crushes and extracts the juice.

And for the tapping method I would like to know which species, how old the stalk has to be, the method of tapping and when to do this.

You would think that all this is pretty simple, yet there is no info online. None. There are a couple of pictures of the first method by some tourists who are drinking the bamboo juice, but no info.

I'm hoping someone knows.

David,

I've already seen that page but both you and foxd are pointing to Chinese medical use. That is not what I'm talking about.

I'm gonna try to post an image with this reply. It shows the tourist drinking pressed juice from bamboo stalk pressed on the roadside in an Asian country. Maybe you guys can see something in the image that's helpful. Hopefully someone from Asia can chime in. Please...

Not really enough to go on. I can't picture canes being squeezed for their juice. Maybe shoots, or a bamboo fungus, or something not bamboo, but called bamboo juice anyway.

Thanks guys,

I'm beginning to think that you are right. It's probably some other species.

At any rate, I did some more digging and made some calls and I think I already have enough for us to go on to try some things.

If someone from Asia or someone familiar with Asian practices has some info I welcome it so I will check back here from time to time. But I'm pretty sure that what they are using for juice is some other species. I would still like to know though.

So, thanks again.

Darian

I got it guys. It's SUGARCANE juice. Not bamboo juice. It's in the bamboo family so it looks like bamboo.

Damn, I was going out of my mind trying to figure out what it is. Now I can't help but laugh...

OK, well that makes sense. I grew up in Louisiana and when the sugar cane was ripe you could cut a cane and suck the juice out. Tastes a lot like sugar water. No medicinal value that I know of.
