Old culms are olive yellow to dark green. The new shoots this year where the classic purple Ph. aureosulcata is known for. The culms, also have the "sandpaper" effect when you trace your finger up the sulcus. I think this grove has far to many "crooked culms in it to be anything but Ph' aureosulcata 'alata'. Actually I called the farmer up and asked if he had Ar. gigantea, informed him it was type of bamboo , he said he had some on his property so I paid him a visit. It was quite obvious this wasn't Ar. gigantea, but it was only 15 bucks for a 20lb plant so I jumped on it.
