A friend sent these pictures to me.
I thought it was a nice use of veitchii as an underplanting.
My friend said that the bamboo appeared to be coming up thru cement. The last phot does give pause, but I suspect its just an illusion created by silt or something.
I may get a chance to go view this planting and if so I'll take some shoot pics, etc.
Any ideas what it may be till then?
If not, just enjoy.

Hi Jeff,

The shape/ form of the plant makes me think of bissetii. Almost impossible to ID (for me) without the shoot. I like the underplanting as well. I would like to underplant several of the groves near my house to control weeds and grass during shooting season. My yard bamboos look pretty ratty this time of year since I let the grass grow around the new shoots and wait for them to harden off until I start trimming.

That was my approach at former properties and my current plan. (Boo just started getting planted again).
Seems the least amount of work to me if you can put up with the untidiness.

When would you suggest underplanting? Wait and the underplanting might have difficulty getting established. If you do it from the beginning, any chance the Veitchii might overtake smaller divisions?

Thanks for the tentative id. Accuracy was not expected, but I figure your instincts are pretty good.
Hope to see it myself soon and hopefully, there will be a shoot or two available for photographing.

I was thinking after the bamboo has established 2-3 years, then start underplanting at the edges. I have no experience doing this so I'm just guessing
