Below are several photos of Phyllostachys prominens growing in Boonville, NC since 1999 having been imported originally by Jim Waddick of Kansas City, MO. This has been a very hardy and vigorous Phyllostachys growing and behaving much like timber bamboos Vivax and Bambusoides. All photos taken in 2009.

Those are awesome! Do you think they would grow in zone 5 Michigan? Are they as cold hardy as Yellow groove?

Have no idea how hardy Ph. prominens is. It has never suffered in the least here in northwestern North Carolina which is the top of Zone7. We have hit zero a few during the last few years and it was undaunted. Phyllostachys aurea and Ph. nigra were slightly damaged at zero but not Prominens. It did not survive in Kansas City, Mo.

hardier than nigra, huh? Hmmmm.... the more I read about this boo, the more I think I need it. I only have room for (or want) a few on my acre. This is looking like one for the short list.

This is definitely on my to want list if its hardy, good wood, looks pretty and vigorous. Are you willing to sell any, or trade?

I would imagine that the reason it didn't survive in Kansas City had to do with other factors beside cold.

IIRC, has been many reports in Kansas City area of children going around whipping cats, and bamboo cane usage for such cruel sports would indicate why the prominens never survived.

Great I am particularly interested in prominens, if you can ship a division, then I would like a fairly large division if feasible with enough rhizome mass. Is there anything particular on my plant list on my profile you need? About half of my bamboos appear dividable so far.

If you are selling, we could work out a deal depending on how large a division is shipped. I'm always looking to expand the variety of bamboos in my garden. By the way do you have only huge prominens plants?, or are there shorter ones that won't require topping? How large of a division would you be able to ship through UPS?
