Well the division must have sparked something... each division planter has atleast 3 new culms... while it was in its original 50 gallon planter, the previous owner said it only put up 1-2 new culms each year. Likely cause of the poor conditions the planter was in to. Soil was all but gone when I finally managed to get the huge lump out of the planter. Split it in half... placed half in the back yard and the other half I was able to split 3 ways and still keep 2-3 culms in each planter.

Update to new growth ;-) Hearing and reading mixed emotions on what better induces the ebony color... some say more shade...others say full sun... and yet a third suggested high Nitrogen. Who has this plant and has the all black culms on a more regular basis? Maybe mine isnt the plant i think it is? maybe it will remain splotchy... but I do have a culm in another planter that is full black top to bottom. So I'm stumped. But like the plant just the same.
