Bambusa Lako flowering in Bay City, TX
My friend Van send me some pics a few days ago showing his Lako flowering. It is a very small division with just a few seeds coming off low on a culm. No idea if they are just chaff or will have a viable seed yet.

Has he propagated the plant at all, and if so are all the divisions flowering, or is it just one?

I've got stock plants (the pots I take divisions from) that have been flowering for years. Never any seeds are produced and the divisions that are taken off of the stock pots do not flower.

I have about 35 or so B. Lako... and none flower. Not once since I have been growing them. Roy, do you think it is stress related??

Mine are definitely flowering from stress. I've been taking divisions off of them for years and that seems to be the reason the pots flower. I never get any seeds though.boonut wrote:I have about 35 or so B. Lako... and none flower. Not once since I have been growing them. Roy, do you think it is stress related??
If I did get some seed production, and all the seedlings came up green, and stayed green, what would the name of the seedling plants?

If they are viable seeds and grew then it could be a spotted Lako!
Schizostachyum brachycladum seems easily prone to flowering too but I understand seeds are usually never viable.
Hey wait a minute, would this not explain why we see some of these seed varieties on E bay? Maybe they really are selling Lako, or this or that? Does not mean they are fertile seeds though.

Well, I don't think so, but here's what I've got a "grasp" on and what I don't have a "grasp" on. If Bambusa multiplex "Alphonse Karr" flowers, then say 99.9999 of the seedling are green and are called Bambusa multiplex. I can understand that biological logic. But when a Bambusa lako does produce viable seed, and then the seedling are green culmed and never turn black, then what would be the proper ID name for them? And I'm not sure that anyone has actually seen any seeds produced by Bambusa lako. I'm not sure that any Bambusa lako plants produce any seeds. Others may disagree, but show you evidence when you do and being sold on E-Bay as B. lako seed is no evidence at all.mike best wrote:If they are viable seeds and grew then it could be a spotted Lako!

I must be stupid. That was such an obvious answer.mantis wrote:D. strictus.Roy wrote: But when a Bambusa lako does produce viable seed, and then the seedling are green culmed and never turn black, then what would be the proper ID name for them?
