Phyllostachys Vivax???

Ok... I need help with from the runner experts out there. Dug this up as Ph. vivax...

What do you think?

It's my first shoot bigger than 1/2" for a runner on the Boonut Farm. So far it is about 4 foot tall. The initial culm when dug was about 1" in diameter. All the other runners kept getting smaller on the farm... this is the first one to get slowly bigger. :cheers:

Only one shoot so far this year. Hope there are many more to come.

Your shoot is still a bit juvenile for me to ID, it has the look of Aurea, Viridis, Bambusoides with those long cream-edged blades but I can't see the ligule/auricles etc for additional hints.

If you feel like experimenting you might try Phy. Lithophylla. I think Jim Bonner has it. I believe it has southern Taiwan origins and might not be as cold sensitive. Also as you probably already know Aurea & Bambusoides are the others to try there.

Will this close up help ID the boo? I have had it in the ground for a little over 3 years now. It put up about 10 shoots last year.

It came from Betty's place near Outlaw's farm. I want to make sure I have the best ID because it is one of the few runners to grow here.

Maybe Steve can assist...

I believe the ID is correct. I am suprized it has sized up more than P. viridis though. Did you get some of that while down also?

If Vivax & Viridis were both at the same site, I'd really suspect that you have the Viridis, rather than Vivax there.

You are right. It does have some similarities. But what do I know? I'm just a tropical guy. :lol:

I only got what was identified as Phyllostachys Vivax. I have Ph. Viridis "Robert Young" that I purchased from several sources. Only one clump is hanging on... though still getting smaller each year.

I also have Semiarundinaria Fastuosa "viridis". It is growing and spreading, but not getting any taller. It is the same size as when I planted it in 2002. It spread out about 2 feet from the original planting.

Like Roy... I am just a tropical guy trying to find answers. Don't know much at all about runners... except they normally don't grow down here.

I think it is Ph. Viridis as posted by Kinder. Kinder may have a better idea.

I could have gotten the names mixed up also when I got it.

It looks like Ph. viridis to me, but I am by no means certain. If it is Ph. viridis, it will have that pigskin texture to its culm surface (as will 'Robert Young'). It is fairly easy to feel this texture, especially if you have a smooth Phyllostachys sp. for comparison. If you can get a very close macro photograph of a newly matured culm, it might be possible to see the texture, but I have not tried to do this.

Boonut,

In your image, none of the new shoot's leaves(?) have any crinkle/wrinkle in them. Is this the way all of them are. Some of new shoot images I've been looking at have the crinkles/wrinkles and to me that should be something that would help with the ID.

As a side note, I'm trying to think of any tropical bamboos that have the crinkle/wrinkle effect or syndrome.
