I've been uploading some detailed images of BAMBUSA sp. 'Richard Waldron'. Don't know if we will ever get a proper ID on this one. It was a seedling that Richard Waldron obtained, (don't know from where), but it was supposed to be a large bamboo: Bambusa edulis. So far it has been far from a large bamboo. More of the size of B. m. 'Golden Goddess", but with very erect culms. Hopefully it will stay in the 8 to 10 foot caterory. The only cold tolerance we know about is 26 F with no damage. Here is the link and a few images:

Boonut,

I see you have uploaded some images of your Bambusa sp. 'Richard Waldron' seedling.

Looking at the description of the plant on Bambooweb.info I can only believe that this is the same description that will appear in the 2007 ABS Source List when it reaches final print form sometime hopefully in 2007.

"20.00 ft X 0.50 diameter.......Compact erect small bamboo similar to B. multiplex, identity and origins uncertain".

Where the 20 feet came from baffles me. I don't know of anyone who has this plant that will say that it grows 20 feet tall. What I keep hearing is around 10 feet is the max. I would like to know what person on the Source List Committee gave the information that it grows 20 feet and who is growing it and where that it grows 20 feet tall. I know this type of information is top secret, but I still want to know and am asking the question.

I got mine last year from Chuck. It is doing very well here in my back yard. I noticed the striping in the culm sheaths.

I'll let you know how it does here in a few years.

Location: We are less than one hour south of downtown Houston. We are located in Wild Peach, Texas located half way between Brazoria and West Columbia. Exit hwy 36 onto County Road 354. Take County Road 353 west . Go approximately 2.4 miles. We are on the left.
I will have to look mine over. I never paid much attention to see any stripes. I got mine from Richard his last visit to Mercer. Maybe two years ago March? I don't think it is over 6' yet, need to confirm.

Roy if that first picture is of an unpruned plant...8-10 feet larges leaves clear lower culms? Heck of a decorative specimen plant. Should be much in demand.

Bamboo Outlaw,

The stripes aren't on all the culm sheaths, and because the culms are small, certainly not 1/2 in diameter, they might not be noticeable unless one is looking for the stripes.

I was googleing around and came back across this post again. I fogot to ever check for stripes on the culms sheaths. My plant topped out at 10 feet.

I just trimmed out some old dead culms from my clump yesterday and I noticed I have some new shoots coming up. They seem to be a bit larger than current culms. I'll see if I remember to look for any stripes on any of the culm sheaths.

Mine is shooting now with some larger shoots. I will see about measuring and looking for stripes. Marcat got a start off mine after we started this thread. I believe he made some cuttings too.

The cuttings cratered. They started putting on new growth but were not able to sustain them. Going to leave them in the misters just in case. I took the cutting from the upper culms when pruning the division I got from Outlaw and from the way they tried to produce I would bet that cuttings from the lower two thirds of the culm would make.
Oh and from seeing Outlaws I realize I was right this is one nice looking bamboo be great in any landscape.

I recently transplanted mine to the farm and it immediately put up 3 new shoots. All in the 1/2" range. It is about 8 feet tall.

Hello:

I'm new to this site but am looking for sources of BAMBUSA sp. 'Richard Waldron'. I live in the SF Bay Area (Oakland) and it seems to be difficult to find at local nurseries. I'm OK ordering online if necessary. Any suggestions of where I can find BAMBUSA sp. 'Richard Waldron', either somewhere in the Bay Area or else recommend an online supplier?

Many thanks,
kwbarnes
