Grafting Bamboo?

Post by Jeff: Igor's Apprentice »

Has anyone considered or attempted a graft of any type of bamboo?
One possibility that emerges in my mind is that perhaps flowering could be stimulated in a scion species due to being grafted onto a frequent flowering one.

Your thinking of his "Grafting Lucky Bamboo" Humor post. I'm talking about real bamboo. Lucky Bamboo is NOT really bamboo, FYI.

There are a few references to grafting bamboo on the web, but nothing very elaborate or detailed that I found.

I don't know that my idea is that looney. The flowering of apple trees is affected by the root stock they are grafted on.

It is definitely something that is not done much because of it's difficulty. Cambium layers are definitely easier to align intercalary meristems although I do know that it is done with vanilla beans under glass to increase production.

Here is a link to an ABS-SoCal newletter with a bamboo grafting article. I wish I could find the article that that this one makes reference to.
