If you have been watching this site for over a year you know of the F. dracocephala/F. sp 'Rufa' naming controversy. The changes are in for the 2007 ABS species list is in and it corrects the previous naming mistakes.

What was F. dracocephala is now identified as F. apicirubens. The common name is now RED-TIPPED BAMBOO.

What was F. dracocephala 'White Dragon' is now identified as F. apicirubens 'White Dragon'.

What was F. sp. 'Rufa' is now F. dracocephala 'Rufa'.

The common name of"RED-TIPPED BAMBOO". Does this come from the new growth having a reddish blush as perhaps this picture may show (one might have to look for the reddish blush to see it in this picture)

To help to explain the justification for this name change, and to help identification of these 2 bamboos I have finished the species pages for them,

http://bamboo-identification.co.uk/html ... ubens.html

http://bamboo-identification.co.uk/html ... phala.html

and also a page on Dragon's Head Bamboo

http://bamboo-identification.co.uk/html ... amboo.html

Chris,
Thanks for the information. You site is looking great. I need to provide more links to it from the species tables.

Why must they make the names long and hard to say. Now, I will never have a clumper I can pronounce to people.

Yeah, try a fargesia dracula.

With a name like that, sorry, I will not.

Now, they are off to buy a pot of lucky bamboo. [/quote]

They could try orchids. I understand there is one called Dracula vampira.

But you don't understand. They don't want a plant with the name dracula in it, especially an orchid that looks that. That scares people. Too many movies after midnight I say. Also, feeding a furry creature after midnight can cause problems too.

You just got to know the right people! For instance, I'm sure that they would appeal to the Goth crowd. I can easily picture an entire Goth subculture devoted to Goth Gardening.

I would imagine they would only use purple plants in their yard. Wouldn't that be interesting.

That and I think Moonlight gardens would be popular with them.

I am sure glad to have the confusion of this issue finally clarified. I am glad they haven't changed peoples names like that.
Although I did read a few months back that BYU was doing DNA genealogy. Which made me think.... I will bet there will be someone who hates there last name and will find out through DNA that their last name should be something else as a result of an undocumented adoption or infidelity. Then they are going to try changing their name. As if there aren't enough things to worry about.

Nate, where did all the last names come from in the first place? People made them up. My dad tracked our last name to germany and at one time , my ancestors sported the name Glockner before it turned to Kleckner. What was it before then? Very exciting. I'm thinking of changing my last name Bashania.

Lance Bashania, that has a nice ring to it. Better than Lance Dracoheimer.

Anyway, after looking at Chris' work on 'Rufa' I had to go back and look at my photo from spring of this year...
<img src="http://www.bambooweb.info/images/bamboo/RufaAprilShoots.jpg" alt="Fargesia dracocephala 'Rufa'">
A bit hard to tell, but to me it looks authentic. I hope so since it's posted as such in the Bambooweb gallery.

Thanks for the superb info Chris!
