First timer here so I'll get right to the point. I recently bought a clumper and was told the name was Dendrocalamus Bicicatricata. I've looked everywhere for the type on the web. ABS lists no such thing. Wondering if any one out there knows if it's called by a different name. I have no photos of it but the one they have growing at the nursery is pushing 30' - 40' and 4" + culm dia. It was a medium green culm color with burnt orange culm sheaths. That's all I know about it. Thanks

Mike.

Hi Roy,
I bought the Bicicatricata @ Crawley's Nursery. I know that you're very familiar with them and hoped that you'd be the the first to respond to this post. Charlie wasn't there that day so Kathy's the one I dealt with. The specimen plant is behind the first shade tent @ the far end down the driveway on the right by the little creek there.
I bought about a half dozen bamboo plants from you last summer. It was the day your roofing materials were delivered & I was driving a silver dodge ram pickup truck. (All plants are doing well thank you!).

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

I'm trying to get my memory banks to work with your description. When you drive into Charlie's place, the shade tents are on the left and the creek is primarily on the right. Behind the shade tents, there are several bamboos. One of them is the image below and it is a Dendro.. and it does start with a "B". Might that be it?

That's Charlie in the picture. I've known Charlie for about 10 years. I refer to him as a young lad since he is one day younger than I am.

BTW, I'm glad your plants are doing well. What variety did you get from me?

Dendrocalamus brandisii

Roy,

It's definately not the Brandesii. I remember seeing that one.
If you start walking down the drive from the parking area there is a shade tent on the right, maybe a hundred feet or so, and behind that area is the creek. they've recently cleared the area and the "bicicatricata" is past the far end of the shade tent right there by the creek.

As far as the plants I bought from you...if I remember correctly I got the following; Emerald, Oldhamii, Seashore (Seabreeze, depending on who you talk to), Textillis, Brandesii, and Tuldoides. I think that's all but I'm not sure. (Oldtimers disease setting in Ha!). I've sort of lost track. I have about 40 different species in my yard now, mostly medium to giant stuff.

I must have been weak if you bought some Emerald from me. Must have been thinking about paying for the roof job.:D

Charlie must have been doing some expansion work. I'll have to make a trip down shortly.

Rather than D. brandesii, perhaps it D. asper? Look like this in my back yard--see image: Picture 1

Perhaps you are asking about Bambusa bicicatricata--See image: Picture 2

Boonut,

Charlie Crowley in Sarasota has one. I don't know anything about it but will check it out the next time I'm down that way.

Roy,

Picture # 2 looks like the one! No wonder I couldn't find it listed anywhere. Kathy said it was a Dendrocalamus. No matter. Is it on the ABS list? I haven't checked yet. Is it known by any other names?

Thanks for the Emerald. You're the only one I know who puts duct tape on the top of cut culms so it had to be from you! It put up 9 new culms in the last few weeks! Two of them measure in at 1 inch & the rest are at about 3/4". She's a real butte Roy.

Your D. Asper is amazing. I don't have one here yet, but I just ordered one from a grower in Hawaii. Should be here next week. It's the Indonesian clone.

Thanks for all of your help. Since I'm a computer idiot, I will post some pic's as soon as i can figure out how to get them from the camera to the forum!

Well, you know how bamboos change names. It might be something else later. I spoke with Kathy, via email today, and she says that it a Bambusa. I'm sure Charley was told it was a Dendro... when he got it. In a year or two it might be a Dendro. It's not on the ABS Source List. The picture I posted is from the website of Richard Lyons' Nursery Inc. in Homestead, Florida. The site says that they ship, but I couldn't figure out prices. Looked like you just emailed if you saw something you liked.

The duct tape is for the plant to receive electronic signals for the heavens to grow fast. We are going into the dry months. You had better start watering those new shoots so they won't abort. Because of the early Summer drought, a lot of my plants sent up shoots late and since it hasn't rained recently, the new shoots are at a standstill 20 to 40 feet up.

Once you get the images on your computer, then it should be easy to get it to the image gallery:

If you ordered it from Pacific Tropical Gardens, then make sure you have a large enough pot to put it in or put it right into the ground. Everything I have ordered from them is ready to go...

I put mine in a 38 gallon pot and within 3 months, it was showing signs of stress from "wanting more real estate".

If you are interested, we could find out Roy's schedule and go dig some when he isn't around  :D :) 8)

Boonut,

Charlie Crowley in Sarasota has one. I don't know anything about it but will check it out the next time I'm down that way.

Do you kinow if Charlie Crowley ships... or would consider shipping? That one looks unusual enough that I really want one. I will pay for "pain in packaging" and shipping.

I don't know if he ships, but for enough money he might? Here's the email address for the nursery: CrowleyNursery@mailmt.com
