Post by Mike Beard »

What is the best way to mail/ship potted bamboo?ie: where do you find boxes, how do you prepare bamboo for the trip, how do you secure in the box to minimize damage
pros and cons on shippers (UPS, FED X, USPS)and things like overnite, priority mail, express mail, first class mail, standard shipping
being new to boo shipping and needing to ship for an exchange I want to do it rite and others may find the info helpful

Hello Mike,

I noticed no one answered your question so here goes. Ship the cheapest way possible. Avoid shipping in extremely hot weather. Some people make their own boxes from large discarded furniture/ appliance boxes. Make sure the root ball is moist but not wet. Leaking fluid is a good way to incur the wrath of your carrier. Double bag the root ball and secure the root ball to with twine, tape, wedged in, whatever you need to do to keep the root ball from moving. Some people tape the root ball to a stick and then wedge the whole thing into the box. Make sure the box you ship in does not have bar codes and other things that might mess up the optical readers. Make sure your shipping address is easy to read. That's about all I know. Just be creative and use common sense and you will do fine.

Regards,

David

Also:

- Ship so plant won't sit in warehouse/truck over a weekend if possible
- Remove as much soil as is practical.
- Don't be afraid to bend culms or branches. Be careful, but it's possible.
- Plants may need to be topped (shortened) to fit a reasonable-sized box.
- Flat-rate USPS boxes can be a good deal if the plants are heavy.
- Flat-rate USPS boxes can be a bad deal if the plants are very light.
- You can fit a lot of plants in a relatively small box.

I see posts like this on a regular basis. Wonder why either there are not FAQ's to address them or a way to flag past answers on the same subject. Answering posts with the same questions gets tedious. On the surface it looks like folks don't care but it's more of a case of people tired of posting the same info over and over. Rgds

A search feature would be good. In this case, search the words "how to ship bamboo" or "shipping bamboo". RGds

Key words "shipping bamboo" doesn't amount to much in the way of a satisfying or edifying answer.
Need a better search function. Rgds

Yeah, I see what you mean. What else would be good for an FAQ page, perhaps we can build one with Bill's help?

We do have this Wiki that would be a good place to put articles on shipping bamboo, mulching. etc.
Southern Indiana.
My Bamboo List.

The legal issues that will arise when the undead walk the earth are legion, and addressing them all is well beyond what could reasonably be accomplished in this brief Essay. Indeed, a complete treatment of the tax issues alone would require several volumes.

I forgot about the wiki! The FAQ page should just list the questions, with links to the appropriate wiki pages for answers. Maybe?

Mike -- I didn't see anything wrong with fredgpops' post. He was just pointing out that there are some common questions asked, and there should be an easy way to find the answers.

Search Function - Should allow people to access posts from other members on their experiences re the subject.
FAQ's - Info from professional nursery growers by subject. Example: Bamboo Sourcery website has great info on:
1)Facts about bamboo
2) Containment
3) Flowering
4) How & when to plant
5) Site & soil prep
6) Potting mixes
7) Fertilizers
8) Watering
9) Pests
10) Plant selection
11) Regional recommendations
12) Indoor plants
13) Books
14) Removal
15) Definitions

A combination of private growers and their experiences via search function plus nurseries and their recommendations via FAQS would be great. You can only expect members to react to the same questions so long before they zone out. Also, a combination of private growers info plus professional nurseries info will best result in happy/sucessful plants. Rgds

I created a page with some shipping info/tips on it which I gathered from this page.

I tried to edit the page's title to 'Tips for shipping bamboo' but couldn't.
