P viridis and Robert Young

Post by kybamboozle »

I have plenty of p. viridis and robt young. For some reason they have never done well for me and I have them in various locations. Maybe they don't like my alkaline soil. I will trade for any clumpers I don't have or will give them away if you pay for shipping. I can do rhizomes to 7 gal. Email me with particulars.
They don't seem to have started shooting so if we hurry we can do it this spring.

They do very well in my Texas gumbo soil. Very alkaline. How long have they been planted? Were they field divisions?

They are about 4 years old and were field divisions from Brad's place. I have them in various places and they have never looked really good. They run quite a bit but have never put on any size. All last fall they looked ratty with with leaf change. They are marginally hardy here so that may be a big factor.

Did they suffer topkill after this past Winter?

You KNOW what's going to happen this year, they'll produce monster shoots and when the culm leaves fall away and expose those beautiful electric green culms they fall into your good graces and make you want to keep them!

None of my bamboo topkilled last winter. Surprising since it went down to -3 for one night. But the viridis and robert young had a fall leaf shed (10 to 20% dead leaves) that none of my other bamboos did so they looked ratty for 4 months while everything else looked great. Whatever the reason they do not look as good as my aureosulcatas, my nigras, vivax aureocaulis, or my semiarundaria fastuosa. That's when I decided to just keep what does well here and trade the rest off. Lots of other people seem to do well with them.

For those who emailed me about the viridis and robt young - I did a lot of digging this past weekend and some of the division are showing some leaf curl so I am going to have to let them stabilize. I'll keep you posted.

See, here is why I can't bring myself to get rid of mine, after mild winters it likes to jump up in size.
