Also, environmental conditions affect leaf quality.

For example, last winter when the rubromarginata here performed so well its leaves felt noticeably thicker than any other bamboo here and also thicker than its new leaves that formed during this growing season. The most noticeable difference from the year before was the unusually mild winter followed by the unusually dry summer.
