New tractor

Post by boonut »

Just bought a new Mahindra 5530 with front end loader and 6' heavy duty shredder. I read quite a bit about that tractor. Should be very good. Can't beat the price... $19,971 with zero down, zero interest for 60 months. I let the farm grass go a little with all the rain we have had this past year. The grass is almost 3' tall.

There is a wildlife corridor that runs right up to my farm with a drainage ditch that normally has water and fish in it that runs through the farm. That alone brings in the wildlife. The most amazing thing I have seen lately is a white owl. It will let you walk within 8-9 feet of it before taking off. We have seen some kind of wild cat over the years... just the tracks, but never the cat. Of course there are always coyotes.

Definitely let the grass get out of hand. The tractor should tame it. I flooded the farm and put out several bags of nitrogen and soil sulfur at the stand pipes where the water comes out. Then we had lots of rain for several months. Result - LOTS of grass. Good news, however, is that several bamboo that have been just sitting there all of a sudden went crazy. Dendrocalamus Giganteus "Quail Clone" put up two shoots. Bambusa Beecheyana "pubescens" put up about 8 shoots. Both of those have just sit there for several years with no new growth. Dendrocalamus grandis also put up some new shoots.

The grass right next to the stand pipes is so thick, it is hard to walk through it.

Should get the tractor Tuesday or Wednesday. Can't wait. :santa:

This suggests that you are no longer actively trying to sell the farm?

Yup... although at this stage of life, if the right offer came through it would be SOLD!! I just couldn't stand watching the grass take over. The new tractor should give me a little better "tool" to keep the farm under control. We have been talking for a few years about putting in a 1 - 2 acre pond. Maybe it is time to do that also. Gotta have a project to keep it interesting.
