And I am debating whether to put several B. chungii plants there are to put some B. textilis "Kanapabilis". I'm looking at my G. atro right now and the leaves don't look great since it's the first time they have every been exposed to full sun.

Sunshine! And more sunshine!

Post by Roy »

This is my view of my backyard from my computer chair in my family room. Swivel 90 degrees to the right and I'm facing my computer monitor. Swivel 90 to the left and I'm looking at my TV.

Where all the sun is now on the rhapis palms and Monstera deliciosa, there used to be almost full shade, as you can tell by no grass growing in the area. Monday, I going to have the fallen truck, that is levitating over the ground, cut and also the remainder of the now 2 trunked tree. I'm going to put some type of bamboo in as a replacement for the tree, but I'm still debating as to which type of bamboo I want to put there. I'll probably take out the rhapis palms, but I'm not sure about that yet.

Tree Fallen, but not Down!

Post by Roy »

As many of you know, I had some strong winds that blew over part of one of my trees. I was lucky that the tree didn't destroy my neighbor's old wood fence. The tree trunk actually never did hit the ground and the large trunk is about 3 feet off of the ground, parallel to the ground.

Pic 1 shows the tree from the butt end where broke off of the main trunk.

Pic 2 shows the top end, cut away from the neighbor's fence, it's still "up in the air".

Pick 3 shows were part of the tree is wedged against the bamboo. So this part and the other end, wedged against the tree trunk, is what is suspending the tree off of the ground. Note also at the pressure point on the bamboo, there are 2 thirty foot pieces of the tree going straight up.

But I need something fairly tall and I think, because of thickness of the culms, I will exclude B. oldhamii. Plus I have no trees limbs to block the swaying and bending culms in case of the "H" word. I know that B. tex. Kanapabilis will get to 50 feet easily and it's very erect. B. chungii has a more dramatic and intense color, and I do have some culms I know are 3 inches and proabalby 50 feet. But I'm not as sure of getting the 50 foot mark with B chungii in this area as I am of B. tex. Kanapabilis. Decisions, decisions! We had rain (Hoo-Ray) and lightning today, so my tree is still levitating. New day projected for removal now is Wednesday.

((The topped B. chungii in the picture is topped at about 22 feet; if my memory is correct.))

I don't think it's quite tall enough unless I put it on a ladder. :D

I did notice there was a nice Clone X in the auction. Somebody will probably get that one for a steal. The lady in red doesn't go with the plant.
