I think its beautiful! I'm always looking for sports and I guess that extends to internet pictures. :lol:

I agree with you too, I am always watching sports. Preferably a Mets/Yankees World Series. :lol:

also I look out for sports/witches brooms on conifers and maples.

I am not sure which species those last pictures represent. I posted some A. tecta pictures on the database but forgot to reduce them so I won't post them here. Look at them and see if that helps any. The air canals remind me of the holes in corrugated cardboard and are located on the outer edge of the rhizome. You can see them with a hand lens or just the naked eye once you know what they look like. In our area A. gigantea in shade can look a lot like A. tecta but it will not have the air canals.

thanks for the clarification of the air channels in tecta rhizomes. i've always wanted to check for them, but i wasn't sure what they would look like.

In the sunny location:

I was looking for a photo of a rhizome showing the air canals. I guess I must have been confused.

Both the pics I posted from the other day and the boo I found nearby are A.gigantea then. There is definitely nothing like what you describe as the air chambers. That answers the height issue. Now I have to find some tecta so that I can see these air chambers and grow these similar species side by side.

I got in a hurry Friday and should have left off the air canal description since I did not have a picture. Sorry for the confusion. There are two pictures below. One is an A. tecta rhizome cross section. I flattened it slightly with the pruners and it split as it dried but I think you can see the air canals around the perimeter of the rhizome. The second picture is a colony of A. appalachiana taken in north Georgia this weekend. I dug a few and if any survive will offer one at the SE chapter ABS plant auction in February.

The appalachiana that I collected in July shocked really bad. Granted I didn't have a shovel with me as I wasn't planning on digging boo, so the rhizomes were minimal. I have some amount of new foliage, but it is little. It will all survive, but it will be a while before it looks like it did in situ.

Thanks for the picture. I remember seeing an image of a cross-section of a A. g. 'tecta' in a book, but I can't remember where I saw it.

I brought back and grew some A. g. 'tecta' from some low lying areas in Mississippi. I cut one of the rhizomes to see if I could see any 'air canals' and they were indeed some air cavities in it. Of course, this was about 15 years ago. Way before digital cameras and the Internet, so I don't have any images of the canals/cavities.
