Hello,
I recently traded some bamboo for two unidentified clumpers. I would love some help figuring out what they are.

Yes, if we click the links. Unfortunately I can't ID those. Are you certain the first one is a clumper? My first thought when I saw it was "Pseudosasa japonica" (not a clumper). I'll wait for somebody else to have a say though.

I had the same thoughts Alan, I think it is not a clumper and is Ps japonica.

Pseudosasa japonica can act like an open clumper. It will make a densely clumped mass and send runners in all direction, popping out quite far from the original plant, sending out another clump of shoots. It can resemble clumping bamboo, especially in colder climates. It does run though... and it runs fast.

I think you guys are correct about the Pseudosasa japonica. Thank you so much! The women I got this from said "we had this 12 years before it sent out runners" The entire 20 year old clump was an unmaintained kidney bean shape about 12 feet across and very dense. It didn't seem like it was running much. It was a compact footprint, planted in shade. I will take pics of the new shoots when they come up.

The second one is puzzling me too. She said maybe it was golden Goddess. It does look like some of the golden goddess pics I pull up. I thought Golden Goddess has a solid core, this bamboo is hollow inside. I will take more \ better pics when I return to her house, or get new shoots coming up.

Thanks Guys.

The leaves do not look right to me for Golden Goddess, and I would not describe that as having yellow culms really. Go to Chris Stapleton's website and look at characteristics of those culms, especially the nodes and branching compliment. I'd suggest looking at the montane species perhaps Himalayacalamus, maybe Fargesia or Borinda.

With those curled spindle-shaped leaves with drawn-out tips it is probably either Fargesia apicirubens or Fargesia robusta. The absence or presence of oral setae on the leaf sheaths will distinguish them easily.

Oh awesome, You guys are awesome.

I believe there is a presence of oral setae. Amazing.

If I look at the pics here:

(Fargesia robusta) It does look just like what I have.

Most of the photos I have seen from the web the culms look so green, it threw me off. Here is a street view of the original clump. I think she needs a bit of help keeping the clump neat so hopefully I can help her with that and get a bit more. :sawzall:

Thanks again!!
