To me several KRs look similar with respect to culm sheaths, culms, rhizome neck length and nodes: KR 5287, KR 5913, KR 6438, KR 6439, and KR 6791. They might all well be "grossas", on the other hand they are very different in size, uprightness and hardiness. Other KRs look very different and are most likely other species: KR 4175, KR 7613, KR 5177. KR 5177 with it's very short rhizome necks and smaller stature might match the description of macclureana.

Steffen, any idea what a KR7346 looks like when older? Apparently, its similar to KR4558 and KR3032.
It's from Vietnam, and flowered 4 years ago which is why mines only a seedling.
Glad I've got the 5287 - it looks fantastic!

No idea, sorry. I don't have any of those three.

Steffen - It will be very exciting to see KR#5287 & KR#5913 as they mature. Would it not be fantastic if these two hardiest ones straightened themselves up and gave a show like these B. grossa that Chris Stapleton posted!

Yes John, one can dream. I again went through the punblication of Jean-Pierre Demoly (EBS France 2007, non peer reviewed). If one follows this, the whole group (KR 5287, KR 5913, KR 6438, KR 6439, KR 6791, and 5177) should belong to Macclureana or aff. Macclureana (in his view syn. Fargesia grossa hort.). He even places the plants to Yushania, which seems nonsense to me considering the length of the rhizome necks. The plant on the pics of Chris Stapleton looks very different, almost non pruinose in comparison.

Steffen would you happen to have any pictures of Kr 4175?

Thanks in advance.

Very interesting, I bought blue dragon from a very good bamboo specialist and friends of mine and they imported them in under Borinda papyrifera CS1046, could I also have a different borinda...I will have a better look at it

Hi Kailey,

KR4175 is smaller compared to most of the other KRs at least in my garden (3.5 m high).
Shooting last year...

Thanks for the pic. I’ve acquired this one and will look forward to it’s future potential here in the PNW. I’m guessing it’s been pretty hardy for you as well then considering your winter lows can reach -17c if I recall.

Once again thx for the pic

I planted this one in 2013. Lowest temperature since then was -14 °C, which was no problem. We had -21°C in 2010 and that top killed all KRs except 5913.

Good to know Steffen.

The culms look pretty big on the 4175 in your picture. What’s your guess on max size for it?

My 5913 looks dead at the moment. Dried out unfortunately.

You mean diameter? 2 cm I suppose, but I can measure next weekend. As I mentioned hight is only 3.5 - 4m now. It has not the best place in the garden and many shoots died while growing because lack of water.

...and guess is 3cm diameter and 5 m hight at max...

Just found this information On Kimmei webpage = Borinda papyrifera 'Stapleton 1046') Yunnan province at an altitude of 3600 m. Can become 8 meter high with canes up to 6 cm thick. This true Borinda papyrifera is collected in 1995 by Chris Stapleton. The growing power of this beautiful bamboo with blue culms is enormous. This is the original mother plant of the variety offered in the trade as Fargesia 'Blue Dragon' which has been propagated in the laboratory. Not very hardy.
My plants are manual propagated.it looks to me thought (and I am no expert) that a number of different bamboos are getting sold as blue dragon and I am sure the same can be said with green dragon, I am not a big fan of these commercial names as they don’t seem to have a true identity. Will there be a black dragon next which could be a few different bamboos too

At Ness, there is a bamboo that is labelled "4175 or 4059". Here are some photos:

https://www.flickr.com/search/?text=kr4059

At another location there is a bamboo more confidently labelled 4175. It looks like this:
KR4175.jpg
KR 4059 is from the ridge of Cang Shan, nr Dali at 3600m, near where Borinda frigidorum was collected
KR 4175 is from the roadside? about 50km sth of Shangrila towards the Yangtse at 3100m, moving into the range of Fargesia nitida, which has similarly sized leaves and similar red culms

Chris, are there obvious characteristics that separate Borinda from Himalaycalamus?
