Please identify this Phyllostachys

Post by vindiesel.zmaj »

Hi. Don't know how mature plant looks, how tall and how big is the diameter. All I have is these pictures. That small culm is strong, very thick walled, and smooth to the touch. Thank you in advance for your answers.

I did some research on my own, and I found something that could be it. Really hope it is that. Could it be Ph. Prominens? Here is the pic of his shoot. It looks like it, right? Anybody knows what is the max height and diameter? And how fast does it size up(how many years till mature plants, good soil regular fertilization, plenty of water...)?

I did check it at kimmei, but information I want is not there. They say:

Phyllostachys prominens (picture above left) Strong grower with very thick erect culms and prominent rings. Resembles Ph. dulcis and is sure related to it.
Height 6-8 m.+ sun till half shadow hardy between -18/-20°C

Also they say:

Phyllostachys aureosulcata (picture above right) Olive green culms with on the flat side a yellow stripe. Some culms have a swung at the base. For a colder climate this species (+ varieties) is recommended.
Height 6-7 m. sun till half shadow hardy between -20/-23°C

And aureosulcata grows about 9-10m here... So, I can expect prominens to be about 12m tall here?

He has pictures of his on the site I believe and those appear over 6cm, height as he lists 6-8meters. Not very many people have this bamboo so there is not much info. I think if you search this site you'll some posts about it. A fast grower with large diameter culms but I think not many people have mature sizes. Perhaps Fred has it listed at the bamboo lexicon website?
