Phyllostachys nigra Megurochiku ?

Post by Cooper12 »

I got a few divisions from a friend that when he got it it said Black Stripe on tag. None of his I could see had a stripe on the culm .
the division with the lighter yellow green culms where just relocated from the sun. the darker example was taken from the same friend same location but was shadier so darker green/blue green.

I know that sometimes the darker stripping does not show for a long time and may only occur on a few of the culms .
I am pretty sure this a nigra of some sort. looks super close to my Henon division . Not 100% sure though.
Just wondering everyones opinions . sorry about the pics

I have black stripe and Henon planted about 20 feet apart in the ground here. Some types of black stripe are stingy with stripes. Mine has no stripes and it has been several years in the ground now. It grows and looks exactly like Henon. I know it is black stripe because it came from Bamboo Garden. I have also seen large mature 30 year old clumps of black stripe in California and only a few culms had faded black striping on it. Similar to some large clumps that used to be at Bamboo Garden but are no longer there.

So for now I just treat black stripe like Henon. The culms turns yellow in full sun, and stay green-grey in shade. All of this is what you have described, so I think that you have black stripe, or Phy. nigra Megurochiku.

I found this on one cane at least . looks like the start of a stripe to me

Here is a photo I took of a mature Shimadake at Bamboo Sorcery in CA several years ago. I should print it out and hang it next to my Shimadake so it gets the idea of what it is supposed to do...

I am in northern Oregon now. I lived in CA for 35 years though, San Diego, Monterey, Los Gatos, North Lake Tahoe... and other places. I have photos of bamboos from many places up and down the west coast for my likely to never be published book on Phyllostachys Bamboos and Related Genera. I have thousands of digital photos of bamboos.
