Bissetti?, Decora?

Post by dependable »

This plant sold to me a while back as P decora. Looks a lot like bissetii to me.

If it is decora, what are distinquishing charictaristics?

Can probably take pictures of more mature shoots later in month.

Not decora for certain, look at shoot photos of it (here or my website) and the diff is quite obvious - very ornate either (or both) burgundy & cream striped sheathes or green/cream, blades also somewhat distinct.

This from a different stand, one a customer asked me to dig out of her lawn years ago. I also think this might be bissetii. Looks similar when coming out of the ground. These shoots show more purple at base. Has green leaflets at culm tip instead of purple. These were shooting in full sun, first batch in shade.

Once emerged, they look pretty much like the others. Both of these are fast growing and cold hardy. Will post pictures of yet another when shoots come up.

Thanks, I think everything here I think may be bissetti probably is. And a couple of them were sold as something else by a well known new england supplier back when he had a fancy catalog. I guess it might have been innocent mistake, as bissetti gets everywhere, but for the prices I paid.....

Are there any types that closely resemble bissetti(including shoot appearence and hardiness)?

Less common but to my eye Phy humilis looks very similar, the difference I see is vertical white stripes on the culm sheathes if you stare long enough. Phy arcana shoots quite similar as well but eye can see a difference, I have them mixing and can tell them apart, arcana not as hardy.
