I have someone else saying Japanese Timber.

Some of the culms are 3.5" diameter. Has aurea been reported that size? They do not fertilize (they probably roundup :)

These are gigantic.
Shoot on first picture definitely looks typical for aurea shoot, and the culm in the back also has compressed internodes. The tall bamboo forest picture... wow, a bit large for aurea, but I guess it's possible in perfect growing conditions. Are you sure all the photos belong to the same bamboo?

I'm with Tarzanus, the shoot looks like aurea, the culm closeup seems to be a different species.

This is just a guess on my part...but I wonder if it could be Phyllostachys Bambusoides 'slender crookstem' or 'white crookstem' ?

I think I've seen aurea exceed two inches. I guess I'll go measure it, the next time I'm at the Forth Worth arboretum. Somebody claimed that in an E. Texas grove somewhere, it exceeds three, and approaches four inches. I don't know if that is accurate or not. M

I am almost certain it is not Slender Crookstem, with it's darker, shinier green. The "crooks" can be quite dramatic, as well. M

If the photo is from Mississippi, that's an ideal place to grow bamboo, so you never know. Aurea is a very common bamboo in the South. M

It's Central MS.

I am about to clear cut it for these folks who want "all of it gone" because they think it is destroying their septic system (could be, if they didn't put their septic down far enough like it should have been...) among being the worst thing in the world (where ever the leaves fall shoots grow so make sure the leaves are picked up!).

I would like to transplant it and use it on about 10 acres if it is noteworthy. But aurea, no !

I start Thursday.
