If indeed it is Moso I'd say it is the coveted tortoise shell. Do you know it to be Moso or could it be Aurea? Either way it is attractive.

Not Roundup. Too consistent, although I have heard that Roundup will make compressed internodes on bamboo. That could be tortoise shell (AKA: Heterocycla, a compressed internode form of Moso). I have photographed many of them at Hakone gardens in Saratoga, CA, as well as one at Bamboo Garden in Oregon. Ned actually tried to get me to buy into his Tortoise shell specimen/experiment when I was looking at it. Here is one of them to compare to:
Aureas and Moso are the two that do this. Moso of course grows far larger than aureas. One thing to note is that all of the Tourtoise shell Mosos that I have seen have consistent curved turtle backed internodes, whereas aureas have compressed internodes as well as bent internodes, as seen in your photo. If you are sure they are Moso, which your online ID says that you grow, they would indeed be the very rare Heterocycla form of Moso.

Happy trails...
