why are yellow culms mixed in here? all of these came up this season. the old man says he dug up about 15 feet of rhizomes 20 years ago down in LA and brought it back to MS. he said the culms where he dug up 20 years ago were 6 inches around and "70" feet high.
also, keep in mind within the grove there are blue culms (i've re-attached)

Re: Henon
Need shoot photos, your early ones of shoots look like aurea and nothing at all like henon, the cane photos do look henon-like, but some look rubro-like...henon is a good guess but the shoots of henon are so unique that it would make ID'ing possible. Without the henon shoot photos then folks are just guessing. I know it is too late to get them at this point but perhaps there are some aborted ones that would still show characteristics?

Re: Henon
Thanks so much for your input, Needmore!
General question: What species puts up yellow culms AND green culms like the ones in my jun04 post? There are none that have green/yellow stripes on them (vivax, right?)
Also, notice on the single leaf picture, the little hairs. Is that significant?

Re: Henon
I think what you are seeing is age difference in canes, most of the green cane species come up green and each year they fade towards yellow in the light so by year 3 or so they aren't green anymore and are golden'ish - nearly all of the green ones do this. If though you are saying that new canes are both green and some yellow then not many do that, maybe vivax aureocaulis might and Robert Young comes up green but turns yellow in a few weeks.

Like needmore I also think that the yellow canes are old ones.
Does anyone else find it odd that the yellowish canes only show one side-branch as if the other one had been cut off?
On some of the pictures you can see kinks in some of the lower nodes on bigger culms.
I've come to understand that that is often seen in praecox and iridescens. Now for iridescens we are missing the typical striping but maybe this could be a form of praecox?
Praecox has strong powdering and a bluish-green color on new culms.
[edit] dulcis may also be a candidate
