Another i.d. problem and stunning growth in NS
Under the thread Boo shoots for 2012 I posted on Thu Jun 14, 2012 9:15 am 5 photos of what we were sure was a big grove of P. aureosulcata. While I hadn't seen this bamboo for almost 20 years I asked my friend if it had a green culm with a yellow sulcus and he agreed it did. Well I dropped by today and was nearly floored by it's growth. The grove was far larger than the previous photos implied. We measured new canes up to 20 feet already. However there are no signs of yellow sulci on any of the old culms so it's i.d. time yet again. Having asked for another i.d. recently that Brad i.d.'ed as P. bissetii that was my first instinct.
First we start with 2, shoot & culm sheaths
So there will be a lot of pix-posts to follow.
Terribly exciting to find a Phyllos performing here albeit in the warmer Annapolis Valley.

And lastly the tallest ones.
The grove is circa 60 ft long and about 15 feet through.

One of the aureosulcata clan for sure I'd say, if no yellow sulcus then it must be 'alata'.

Brad - Definitely rough to the touch with an upward rub on this one. Hmm.. this originally came from Niagara Falls, Ontario around 1980, would 'Alata' have been around back then? That's what threw me for a loop. There were some setae but not on every sheath - see this poor photo - they were brown.
I don't think I'll ever get the hang of it with sheath colourations. You have to look at 50 to see what is somewhat the norm!
Good work and thanks.

Re: Another i.d. problem and stunning growth in NS
Alata is probably the type form for the clan as surely yellow groove originated from it. Many sources list it as hardier and larger than the rest of the clan; everyone I know who grows it says the opposite. Go figure...someone here a few years back had a large grove of large culms of it I think in the NE US so it seems right for what you have.
I have a very poorly placed, and neglected one that remains under 2 meters after many years but it is a neglected plant that gets no direct sun. Still, other bamboos in similar conditions are much larger.

Always the luck that the aberrant is found first and gets the type name. After that aberrants are nowhere to be found if looking for one!needmore wrote:Alata is probably the type form for the clan as surely yellow groove originated from it.

I have some P a alata in one of my wild. mixed species perimeter groves. It look just like your pictures and it is on a roll. Seems to have a slight advantage over regular aureosulcata in the shade.

Re: Another i.d. problem and stunning growth in NS
John- I am 99% sure that that is the same plant that I have been growing as Phy. aureosulcata. My plant only has a rare yellow sulcus, mostly the culms are straight green. It is vigourous and on par with the neighbouring Phy. aureoculcata 'spectibilis' in terms of hardiness. The plant that I bought as Phy. auroe. 'alata' is the most vigourous of my bamboo but it is still young having spread perhaps 10' round, and the culms are probably about 10' high. A neighbouring Phy. bissetti has, in comparison, not moved or produced any culms over 3'. I may rip that thing out actually.
P.S. Have a look at my Fargesia that needs a positive I.D. It is in the identification section.

A shot of the 'Alata' yesterday. Just had to pay it another visit after leafing out.

A lovely grove to be sure. And to get to 20' in NS is very impressive!
