Got this from a wholesale nursery. I ordered phy Praecox, When it arrived I informed them that they sent me Phy.aurea. No matter how sure I am, there is still that doubt. Shall I remain smug with my great knowledge? Or do I owe them an apology?

Sorry, I can't see the plant you are asking about: all those aurea culms are in the way

It actually looks like heteroclada Solidstem, not certain but the culms look right and that shoot although potentially misleading, does also, if the tips of the culms leaves remain tight it is the heteroclada, if the blades stretch ribbony, then aurea likely. In any case it does not look like praecox to me.

Brad, I actually had the same thought about the solidstem after I posted but thought the compressed internodes were much rarer on that species. They do look more like pics of solidstem compressions though. My first post was somewhat of a joke anyway: I thought the idea of it being praecox was laughable. If the nursery that was bought from has seen that picture and still insists that it is praecox, they are in serious denial, IMO!

Brad, I think you may have nailed it as Heteroclada. When I first saw the Culms, my eyes said Aurea, but my brain kept saying hmmm I dont know about that. So far all the shoots are coming up at an angle, I'm assuming they are end shoots. If so, they don't always show the same sheath pattern of a normal shoot.
I'll contact the Nursery next week and ask if they have ever grown Heteroclada.

The branches on the heteroclada should be very horizontal and stiff with branchlets/leaves that look different from most bamboo to me they look like they point upward more (and are smaller)if that makes sense but from a distance the overall pattern looks different than most bamboo. If aurea I would expect some of the thinner canes to have a bulbous node or 2.

They may not think they have ever grown heteroclada, worth an ask though.
