Hello Group,
I have talked with Brad and Dan about my yellow groove re-leaf.
Here is a photo.

Is this normal?

Looks normal to me...those are the leaf tips starting to form and they look healthy. However, given what time of year it is, it may not re-leaf fully for quite a while. Is this something that got defoliated from lack of water, or what?

If you're questioning the dark color, Brad has mentioned before that he's noticed a darkening on young plants caused by colder temps, and I'm seeing the same thing on some of my potted divisions. I have a Yellow Groove division I took a couple months ago that put up a few shoots, and those shoots are now very dark purple -- almost black. Looks pretty cool. Even the 2 existing culms have darkened up a bit. The parent plant doesn't show this at all.

It seems like the foliage goes through a phase of having a few older leaves turn yellow and drop in October and after that, the remaining leaves turn duller, thicker with darkened stems when it gets cold enough. Even the new leaves that are still unfolding seem to turn very hard. This change is easily seen on the larger leaf bamboos such as Bissetii, Rubro, & Dulcis.

I think it might be an adaptive mechanism to deal with extreme temperatures, but I have no idea of what's happening inside the plant.

Tony, those are the color that I was telling you about, not quite black - close, but really a very dark burgundy. I see lots of that coloration on canes and leaves this time of year. It does not seem to be a frost issue as we really have not had enough of a frost here yet to annoy my Bambusa vulgaris 'Vittata', or the ginger or the castors and yet I have many dark burgundy colored canes. The flowers on the Sasa senanensis are that color and in fact when I first saw your photo I thought that those may be flowers rather than branchces but probably not.

I have some new uncommon bamboos - Phy. nigella, Phy. robustiramea, Sasa gracilimus, Shibataea nanpingensis, Indocalamus pumilis, Ind herklotsii, Phy hispida, and they all have the coloration as do most everything else in pots so it seems pretty common for fall bamboo plants. The in-ground ones don't seem to turn as much.

bambootony-
Glad to hear that it's re-leafed. And congratulations on getting something bought on eBay to survive!
