How far can a rhizome travel in 40 years?

I don't know about Johnny Nudarhizome, but I happened to find out a few years ago that Johnny Appleseed is buried in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His gravesite is either in what was once Archer Park or it is in a golf course.

I wonder if there was a Johnny Yellow Groove that passed through Bloomington. :?

Ph. Nuda would be rather cool to have, but can nuda do this?

Google Maps location for the grove. its the green in the map center that goes out to the road.

http://maps.google.com/maps/mm?ie=UTF8&hl=en&ll=39.770952,-75.141544&spn=0.001499,0.002401&t=h&z=19

Grove divisions are around 15ft tall and with a 20lbs root ball. Old culms are olive yellow to dark green. The new shoots this year where the classic purple Ph. aureosulcata is known for. The culms, also have the "sandpaper" effect when you trace your finger up the sulcus. I think this grove has far to many "crooked culms in it to be anything but Ph' aureosulcata 'alata'. Actually I called the farmer up and asked if he had Ar. gigantea, informed him it was type of bamboo , he said he had some on his property so I paid him a visit. It was quite obvious this wasn't Ar. gigantea, but it was only 15 bucks for a 20lb plant so I jumped on it.

Yes, Nuda can do that crazy zig zag but your closer pictures combined with the sandpaper feel do indeed suggest an aureosulcata family member. I would assume that Yellow Groove over time could stop the yellow grooving. I understand that it was a sport or seedling of an all green form but since it was 'discovered' first it has been considered to be the type form, rather than an all green form being listed as the type form. Such as with Nigra listed as the type whereas people seem to agree that it is a sport/seedling of Henon which should be the type form.

I don't know where the Alata name comes from but I do suspect that if Yellow Groove produced viable seed the vast majority of new plants would be yellow grooveless.
