Good question. With all of us growing from seed we're in the same boat. From what I know so far it will probably take a few years before IDs will be possible.

I just read up on it a little and it seems the best way, like usual, is to 1st look at the culm sheaths:

If purple blades, then forma purpurata;
else if culms are all straight, then straightstem;
else forma solida.

(It's kinda like a FORTRAN computer program.) :wink:

Here's a shoot from a purpurata form of heteroclada.

Note the red/purple culm leaf blades. The other forms have purple dispersed throughout the whole sheath with greenish blades.

Sorry Wufeng, I wasn't really using standard English in the above description. From what I read, the purpurata form will have pure purple sheath blades (the tips as shown above). The other two forms will have diluted purple mixed with green throughout the sheath.

Straightstem is supposed to get twice as tall as purpurata and solida and without crooks or bent culms.

If your plant is big enough you could cut some culms to see if they're solid near the base or lower half.

Hope this helps, but it's still English. If I had good pictures of each I'd post those instead but I don't have any yet. Maybe later this spring.
