OK, so my brother here brings home a bamboo from a garage sale. He said that the owners had a big clump of bamboo that they were digging up and giving away in sections. Solid root mass with surface rhizomes, and three large canes cut to 4 feet, as well as some shrubby low small canes with leaves. It was all gone by the time I went back to look at the 'mother plant' and to get more of it. So all I have to ID this plant with is the division he brought home. Not much to take photos of, sadly. But there are some characteristics that are interesting.

It is a green/green Phyllostachys. No streaks, stripes or splotches, and no compressed internodes. It has very deeply v-grooved sulcus. Deeper than any other types that I have. The two main mature canes are 3/4 to an inch in diameter. The internodes are almost solid toward the base, and are about half hollow at the 4 foot level where they were cut. These are far thicker walled than any of the other Phyllostachys that I have. One culm is straight, the other two are slightly arched. No zig zags in the large or baby culms. The rhizomes are solid, at least the ankle breakers growing above the soil level are. The canes are smooth, no bloom, they may have had some bloom below the nodes at one time, hard to tell. Some of the lower culms have four branches coming off of the nodes. That seems odd for a Phyllostachys.

I am thinking Phy. heterocalada 'Solidstem' or Phy. nidularia 'Farcta'...

I'm with you on both counts. The picture does look like some pictures I've seen of Phy. vivax in the Ocala, Florida area.

BTW: vivax has thin culms. I also have a ton of vivax here... not vivax.

The mental picture. The one from your description.

Yea , I started looking for a picture as well. Anyway, I agree that Vivax has thin walls. The thickest walled Phylostachys I have is P Nuda, which is your basic green Phylo. May have to wait for shooting to ID.
