I was looking around the French bamboo forum (sorry I can't translate the name yet) and just would love to know what bamboo this is. Anyone recognize the species?

I thought the photo worthy to show, copied the photo from the French speaking forum and , photo credit: Gaston2Foix
Bamboo Zen (the Goggle translations are sketchy, I could be wrong, please forgive)

Are you sure its a phyllostachys?

Culms look similar to Schizostachyum Brachycladum.
The leaves of S.V. look a bit bigger.
And the plant in the species looks taller then S.V.

I don't know.
What ever it is, it's a beauty!

That picture is taken at Jos van Der Palen's mother's place in the Netherlands - it is Vivax Aureocaulis. She lives in Valkenswaard which is well south and almost in Belgium. They occasionally go subzero for brief stints but not like US subzero - very different conditions, more like the PNW with deeper BRIEF cold snaps so his bamboo really can size up nicely but does not run mad due to milder summers. When I was there he had several broken culms of that one due to a wet snowfall the day before I arrive - sad to see those things snapped and splintered. You can see more pictures of it on his website at kimmei.com

Thanks Needmore. :) Interesting story.

Yes I see more photos of Vivax Aureocaulis at kimmei.com. It is amazing how tropical his place looks . He is growing palms and tropical looking plants far north to full sizes it seems.

I like how it looks almost like a clumper. So you are saying in hot summers it would be prone to run or spread more?

I think there is a large and tall grove of Vivax in Ocala, FLorida. I wonder what Vivax Aureocaulis would do in this hot climate of Florida.

I live about 1 1/2 hours north of Ocala and I have it in the ground. This spring will be it's second and I will let you know. It started out as a 5 gallon pot and first season put up culms ranging from about 2 ft to 6ft and spread a couple feet out and filled in inbetween. Definitely nowhere near the size of Jos'. It does great in both the heat and the cold here. Last month we were in the upper teens and it did not even receive leafburn. I will try to get a picture up tomorrow.

My guess is Phyllostachys aureosulcata Aureocaulis. Golden culm yellow groove. I t is a wonderfull plant, looks best in full sun.. I have Vivax Auoercalis as well, which is also wonderful, but not as golden.

Needmore is right. It is Phyl. Vivax Aureocaulis at Jos van der Palen's nursery (Bamboekwekerij Kimmei). A very impressive plant with culms close to 3.5 inches in diameter!

You'll find more pictures from Bamboekwekerij Kimmei on my website:
