I bought this lil bamboo a few years back. It's remained in a pot until now. It was sold as a D. asper seedling. I don't have much experience with asper and was wondering if it looks like anybody else's.

guadua,

Welcome aboard. Since this is your first post, I'll go easy on you.

The plant is small and it's hard to tell exactly what it is. But since you mentioned you bought it as a seedling, then I'm going with Dendrocalamus strictus. Not that it looks definitely like strictus, but by the statement you bought it as a seedling that was supposed to be D. asper.

Can you tell us more about how you obtained the plant in question?

Hey Roy, I wish I knew about this forum sooner !

I bought the seedling from Future Forest Nursery in Hawaii. They sell seedlings for agroforestry. They have the asper and guadua angustifolia. I bought 5 asper's and three of the five looked different. One died so now I'm down to two different types. I bought some seedlings a few years back off ebay labled as D. brandsii only to get D. strictus. These from Hawaii are different from the strictus. If you need anymore pics let me know.....

guadua,

You can look through the Bambooweb.info image gallery of the various Dendro's, but I don't know how much it will help you since you have a seedling and all the images are of mature plants or divisions off of a mature plant.

I see you have uploaded up nice images in the gallery. One of my favorite bamboo plants:

Bambusa oldhamii

That one looks very similar to my D. Minor from seed. The leaf shape, spacing etc..

The culms look an awful lot like my young D. Yunnanicus.

The leaves of the yunnanicus look very similar as well.... and the Yunnanicus and Minor both seeded within the last two years.

Of course as Roy points out... a lot of bamboo look alike when young.

To put it in prospective, just think of how a newborn looks and what that new born looks like as an adult. Now you get the picture!
