Hi All,

I have 5 maybe 6 small bamboos that do not know the name of for sure. They do not grow above 1 foot here in Northwest Florida.

I added 4 pics under the "unknown" name. They are all the same plant and the first one is a pic of the back of the leaf. The one side shiny and the other dull is typical of all leaves. The second is the top of the leaf and the third is a leaf group. The fourth is a picture of plants in one-gallon pots.

This plant is very aggressive and drought tolerant. It has left the pots and making itself at home in the area. I planted it at a location a 18 months ago and it is doing fine with no care in sandy soil. I think it has been mowed once and only stands 3 inches tall at that location. It thrives on afternoon soon and drip irrigation in pots.

Thanks.

It looks very similar to one I now have spreading like wildfire. I obtained mine from an out of control urban 'garden', they could not remember what species it was. After considering all potential options, I thought that Pleioblastus humilis 'Pumilis' was most likely. Later I took a piece to Adam Turtle who said to call it Pleioblastus pygmaeus aff as it was most likely a form of Pl. pygmaeus. To me it looks less fernlike than most of the pygameus pictures and more like the pl. humilis, so you might check out photos of those 2 and see what you think.

Here is an old picture of one of mine:

Here is a photo of humilis from the dbase here:

Here is another pygmaeus from the dbase here, looking slightly more fernlike than mine:

Maybe they are all just different forms of pygmaeus, they are so similar.

Michael,

Not to get off topic, but I know you are watching this topic. Did the little one gal. variegated temperate bamboo I gave you, when you came to my house several years ago, like your area a little better than mine? I don't know what the name of the plant was or is?

Roy,

The plant you gave me is doing well here and it will be next on the list to identify.

Back to this plant.

While this plant does look like yours, in a smaller size. It does not get near as tall as yours. Maybe the location? To me it really looks like the picture of the humilis. Can anyone tell me if either the humilis or the pygmaeus have the shiny/dull side on the bottom of the leaf?

Michael
