GROWING CLUMPING BAMBOO SOUTHWEST IDAHO

Post by Cooper12 »

Just curious if anyone here or over seas is growing any Fargesia in drier climates. We have abundant afternoon shade but are in A semi Arid climate. Summer Humidity is fairly low. Slightly less than Sacramento but no where near as dry as Vegas or Reno. We average about 13.75 inches of rain in small rainfalls throughout fall , winter and spring. Snows here but not bad. We are listed as a 7A but locals say plant for 6A.
Average temps in summer are a little lower than my place in Placerville but pretty comparable . My Fargesia there did well in shade.
Average December , January and February lows range from 23-25 f. Highs 36-38. This winter has been very mild though. Low's can get a little below zero maybe every 5-10 years.
for clumpers I have
Fargesia rufa, scabrida and white Dragon

would like to try robusta Campbell
murielae Vampire
nitida Black beauty
Jiuzhaigou Genf
curious of any other recommendations
thanks

It's not exactly dry here, fog abounds but not much in the way of summer rains, You might try Fargesia sp. 'Scabrida'. Here it's shown locally within 100ft of the North Atlantic Ocean. It's been surprisingly hardy and very fast growing. Picture was taken last week.

that looks nice. My scabrida really curls in the winter . Here and my other place it did to. You are colder there as well.

Likely the cold fog prevents rolling here.

Borinda might be a better Genus for you.

I am not sure if any of the Borinda are cold hardy enough
