From my years of growing Phyllostachys I'm accustomed to seeing every planting have some aborted shoots each spring as a normal course of events. Now that I'm growing clumping species of bamboo as well I've noticed that I do not recall seeing any aborted shoots thus far at least on my Bambusa species. Perhaps this is because they are young and sustaining every shoot but I'm wondering if this continues as the plantings mature or if others do see aborted shoots among the Bambusa?

I often see aborted shoots on my Rufa (Fargesia) as well. I did not have any aborted shoots on Bambusa vulgaris I had for a while. Doesn't really count though, it remained potted until it's bitter end.

I have never seen aborted shoots on Pseudosasa japonica and Hibanobambusa tranquillans 'Shiroshima'. Especially the last one, it just spreads with unprecedented vigor. I may end up removing it...

I have 5 and they get big here so I might have a good battle on my hands.

I used to dig a portion on my main Shiroshima grove every year to keep it in check, but lately the blasts of cold in winter have been doing it for me.

Interesting Brad, why is it they abort shoots, one of my Phyllostachys aureosulcata Aureocaulis put up about 20-30 shoots but aborted the last 5-6 shoots
