Re: Bamboo shoots 2018
Phylostachys primotina, 5-6 years or so out from seed, first year the shoots did not look just like bissetti to me. A little wind burn on the leaves form early last winter before I put in garage.
Last year I had it inside with a grow light, and it put on lots of growth, but it was very tender and did not harden off well. This year it was in low light for a few months, but at stable cool temp above freezing. Seems to have liked it better, and no whitefly or aphids.

My bissetii with its first shoot's ever for me! There's 5 if you really look hard. The biggest is just barely 1/4", but it's bigger than the smallest of the original 3 culms. This was a 2 gal plant put in a 5 gal pot July of last year. It spent the winter buried in leaves and snow and seems to have come through our low of -15 with life! Just don't ask to see the leaves that I fried in the bright spring sun a couple weeks ago when I dug it out...lol

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018
Moso bicolor puts out it's first shoot, about the same size as the biggest from last year. It got pretty bad leaf burn even with double tarping since it was just a bad winter, but the branches are leafing back out, and based on my experience, there is probably going to be more shoots to follow even with the damage. If it is warm in the next 3 weeks, they could get passed 10ft, and surpass last year's.

My japonica has been pushing up shoots while living inside for the winter. Over the last 2 months these have been slowly creeping up and now that it's been spending days outside they are finally taking off. There are 8 visible in this picture, and 1 more behind the pot rim in the foreground.

I finally got around to taking some shooting pics
First off, Bicolor and nigra

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018
Then we have
vivax huangwenzhu and aureocaulis and another nigra shoot

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018
Parvifolia and atrovaginata
Re: Bamboo shoots 2018
And finally Shanghai 3 and just two views of some of the groves
Overall okay shooting but no insane upsizing.
The atrovaginata and vivax aureocaulis are spreading quite a bit. I'd say if you want a good hardy screening boo then atrovaginata is a great choice.
Parvifolia is really well behaved here and has almost a clumping habit.

Wow...those atrovaginata shoots are BEAUTIFUL! What are youre winter temps like? And do I see strawberries as ground cover under the boo? If that is I'm curious how it works with the bamboo...my wife and I just did the same under our patch.

These are not strawberries, it's some kind of creeping weed that grows everywhere around here. I think strawberries could grow just fine in the southern edge of the grove if shade is not too deep.

Bummer...was hoping for first hand experience...lol, they sure resemble strawberry leaves. My "grove" will be pretty sparse for a while (maybe forever)...so they should get plenty of light.
Re: Bamboo shoots 2018
I'm not sure if they are on the pictures but some of the groves DO have wild forest strawberries growing underneath them.UPBooMatt wrote:Bummer...was hoping for first hand experience...lol, they sure resemble strawberry leaves. Forest strawberries should work a lot better since they are not as overbred and light-hungry as most commercial cultivars.
Eventually the boo can shade out most plants unless you really thin it out

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018
The last couple days have been such a relief as my yellow groove displays its amazing resilience. Here in Northeast Pennsylvania we had a full week of windchill temps reaching -30F. One hundred percent of my 100+ culms were completely defoliated and I assumed totally top-killed. They looked wretched. Transparent. Gray, at best. But not unlike Lazarus ...
