Location: Amador County, CA on 5 acres with mostly phyllostachys bamboos in USDA zone 8b they tell me
One of my many planting areas consists of a rock planter I made filled with fill dirt, horse manure, wood ash, and hot chicken manure with straw.

I put the bamboos in on March 3 of this year (2017) and took the attached photo. I took the second photo from the same angle (this morning Sept. 17 2017.)

I also have some of my basjoo bananas planted in there as well as zucchinis, jalapeƱos, bell peppers, and cannas in the understory.

There are rhizomes growing about 3 ft. out from the edge of the rock wall already, some airborne and others curving down the rock wall and back into the ground. Most of the rhizome growth is coming from my bissettis and megurochikus in the planter. Bissetti has always been my most aggressive runner.
